Arhuaca Mochila – Handwoven Wool Bag from Colombia

Our Arhuaca mochilas (mochila means "bag" in Spanish) are made by the Arhuaco people, an Indigenous community from the Sierra Nevada mountains in Colombia, a place known as the heart of the world. Their way of life is deeply connected to nature, and each bag reflects that care and purpose.

We partner directly with a women-led artisan group high up in the mountains. Each mochila is handwoven from natural sheep wool, and can take anywhere from 30 to 90 days to make. No two are the same, each one is full of character, story, and soul.

These bags are super roomy, strong, and weather-resistant. Traditionally, everyone in the community wears them — through all seasons, for all kinds of journeys.

COLOURS:
Dark brown, grey and beige wool

PATTERN & MEANING:
KAKU ZERANKWA is an Arhuaco word for Dios Sol. "DIOS SOL" means sun gods in Spanish, the symbol in the middle of this mochila represents the god of the sun.
