Arhuaca Mochila – Handwoven Wool Bag from Colombia

Our Arhuaca mochilas (mochila means "bag" in Spanish) are made by the Arhuaco people, an Indigenous community from the Sierra Nevada mountains in Colombia, a place known as the heart of the world. Their way of life is deeply connected to nature, and each bag reflects that care and purpose.

We partner directly with a women-led artisan group high up in the mountains. Each mochila is handwoven from natural sheep wool, and can take anywhere from 30 to 90 days to make. No two are the same, each one is full of character, story, and soul.

These bags are super roomy, strong, and weather-resistant. Traditionally, everyone in the community wears them — through all seasons, for all kinds of journeys.

COLOURS:
Dark brown, chocolate and beige wool

PATTERN & MEANING:
"SERPIENTE CASCABEL" translate to rattlesnakes. Rattlesnakes shed their skin, which symbolises rebirth, renewal, and transformation. This shedding can be seen as a metaphor for letting go of old issues, beliefs, or emotional baggage to make way for new experiences and personal growth.
